{"id":20304,"date":"2024-04-30T07:26:01","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T11:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kevinjustin.com\/blog\/?p=20304"},"modified":"2024-04-30T07:26:59","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T11:26:59","slug":"servicenow-connector-for-scom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kevinjustin.com\/blog\/2024\/04\/30\/servicenow-connector-for-scom\/","title":{"rendered":"ServiceNow Connector for SCOM"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_20305\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20305\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kevinjustin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Connector.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20305\" src=\"https:\/\/kevinjustin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Connector-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"ServiceNow SNow Connector for SCOM\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kevinjustin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Connector-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kevinjustin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Connector-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/kevinjustin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Connector.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ServiceNow SNow Connector for SCOM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tim Fields (see Tim&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tim-fields-b65a9291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>) and I were recently working on ServiceNow (SNow) REST commands with a customer.\u00a0 Little did we know the SNow API\/connector was released in February.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve been waiting for months for the release.\u00a0 It was also nice to find that many other tools were mapped.\u00a0 Tools like SolarWinds, vCenter, vRealize,\u00a0 Zabbix, SAP manager, Kafka, Nagios, HP OpenView, and even email, SNMP traps were already done.\u00a0 Not that I didn&#8217;t figure this existed, just wasn&#8217;t part of multiple customer&#8217;s request.\u00a0 The SNow connectors are typically installed on SNow MID server(s).\u00a0 In SCOM&#8217;s case, the connector uses SCOM DLL&#8217;s, a configuration file including name, IP, ID with access.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Depending on use cases, you have some options to what best fits your needs.<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>SNow connector only works for a subset of SCOM alerts<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Out of the Box (OotB) built connector. SCOM SNow connector assumes you have SNow MID server(s) installed and configured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>This is better than NetCool connector, as everything was sent to ITSM tool.<\/li>\n<li>Connector allows SCOM group to customize objects for alert\/incident creation<\/li>\n<li>Note:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The default binding rules that contain SCOM as the external source, that applies to IT alerts and\u00a0Metric Intelligence\u00a0raw data, are the following SCOM Management Packs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">All OS Management Packs<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">MS SQL Server<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">IIS<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Example<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If bi-directional is configured, the bi-directional exchange of values to-and-from the external event source is enabled.<\/p>\n<p>These scenarios describe the default bi-directional functionality for SCOM connectors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When an alert is resolved in SCOM, it is auto-closed in\u00a0ServiceNow. However, it is updated irrespective of the bi-directional feature because during each collection cycle, all alert changes are updated.<\/li>\n<li>When an alert is manually closed in\u00a0ServiceNow, it is auto-closed in SCOM. If the alert state is changed to\u00a0Reopen, SCOM is also updated.<\/li>\n<li>When an incident is created and associated to an alert in\u00a0ServiceNow, SCOM receives the incident number as a ticket ID. However, the state of the incident is not available on SCOM. Therefore when the incident is resolved in\u00a0ServiceNow, SCOM is not updated as the incident number remains the same.
